Holes

The project title 'Holes' was a bit off-putting at first, as it is such a broad subject and I couldn't quite pinpoint what theme would suit me best. Through this slight block, I discovered that finding a theme that interested me without restricting myself to the stereotypical topic of Holes was a lot easier. The idea caught me by surprise, in fact, as I was looking out into the darkness from my bedroom window. There was a full moon so the sky and clouds were well-lit, seen gliding across the canvas of the night, whilst silhouettes of artery-like trees bled into the stars. This beautiful setting alone was remarkable, but then I began focusing on the window itself and what it was reflecting from inside my bedroom towards the outside world. To make things even more interesting the reflection of my own face had a slighter twin, created from the light reflecting on the double-glazed windows. Personal Statement & CV

Painting resonates throughout my work as I tend to focus on the human form. Oil painting is my favourite medium to use as the slow drying qualities and texture really suits my way of working. I am a very patient person and therefore I like to spend a considerable amount of time on a piece so that I can hone in on the small, but significant detail. Surprisingly, I have found working in swift, simplistic ways very exciting too. For example, in a recent Life Drawing class the model slowly walked around the room whilst I captured his form in a few swift strokes of a scalpel through black paper. Other materials used in life drawing involved charcoal, taking inspiration from artists such as Anita Taylor. I think this gave me a good focus in life drawing and allowed me to develop the character of the piece.
